Amara Condé is a Guinean dancer, musician, and circus performer. He graduated from the National School of Circus in Guinea and became an acrobat for the Canadian troupe Cavalia in 2013. He is currently continuing his artistic career in Winnipeg.

Indigenous flute workshop
WITH PATRICK THERRIEN

Sunday, May 7, 11 am

Using fully cleanable PVC flutes, the public will be able to enjoy a unique musical experience while learning and mastering a few techniques of Indigenous flute playing, honouring Patrick’s Algonquin roots in the process.

A music education graduate from Université Laval, Patrick Therrien taught music in Québec schools for 33 years.

Percussion workshop
WITH RÉGINALD BONGA

A workshop featuring percussion and traditional Haitian rhythms, where people can discover a variety of musical instruments inspired by nature. The aim is to create musical works that raise people’s awareness of the need to safeguard our environment.

Born in Port-au-Prince, Réginald Bonga is a percussionist involved in the revival of voodoo jazz, a genre inspired by traditional Haitian music. For more than 16 years now, he has promoted it around the world through his shows, thus paying tribute to Haiti’s music pioneers.

SLAM WORKSHOP
WITH ÉLÉMO

Friday, May 12, 5:30 pm

In this 80-minute workshop, Élémo will provide some tools to help understand the power of slam. You’ll also do some writing exercises to stimulate your creativity!

Élémo has been a slam aficionado for over 10 years now, and emcees writing workshops in elementary and high schools. In 2020, he was approached to host some slam capsules on Télé-Québec’s platform. In 2021, he took part in SLAM JAM, a series of Web capsules that initiate youth to poetry and figures of speech.

Presentation of traditional African musical instruments, specifically light percussion instruments.

Gisèle Gbobouo hails from Côte d’Ivoire, where she was a professor of African folk music. A multi-instrumentalist, she excels on the mouth bow, bell rattle, metal bells, scraper idiophone and xylophone.

Creation of flowers from recycled textiles, in groups of 5 to 12. During the creation process, participants will be invited to share stories of mourning.

Claudia Chan Tak is a multidisciplinary artist trained in visual arts and contemporary dance. In recognition of her work, which promote cultural diversity and inclusive practices, the Conseil des arts de Montréal and the Prix de la danse de Montréal awarded her the Envol Award for 2022.

MEDIATION WORKSHOPS
WITH THE PAAL

Sunday, May 14, 11 am – Codex de l’immigration 
Inspired by the Codex Boturini, which tells in drawings the story of the migration of the Aztec people, this workshop invites the public to reflect on their origins and draw them. At the end of the exercise, all the artistic and historical contributions will be brought together to form the Québec’s codex!

Sunday, May 14, 12 pm Le fil de la mémoire 
The artist-mediator will invite participants to draw a precious object and write the memories associated with it. Everyone will be able to share their story by showing their sheet and leaving it on a wall of artwork and memories.

Through collaborative activities, PAAL works to bring together members of different ethnocultural communities from the Montreal metropolitan area.

INSTRUMENTARIUM FORAIN
WITH LA SONOTHÈQUE NOMADE  

From May 7 to May 12, 2 pm to 6 pm | Under the umbrellas

Sonothèque Nomade’s instrumentarium forain is a nomadic sound studio that records and plays back a capella performances in the field. The Kohlecteuse takes an instant snapshot of every person met who chose to enrich the studio’s archive with their song.

May 6, 7, 12, and 13 | Under the umbrellas

Anne-Marie, ATSA’s cultural mediator, will host discovery and discussion workshops related to the Cuisine ton quartier podcast.

Cuisine ton quartier : podcast trails explores the issues faced by refugees and immigrants. An invitation to take a thoughtful, attentive walk by following the audio trails in seven Montreal boroughs (with several suggested trails for each), and available for online listening.
