"SOUS QUEL TOI ?"
JOANNE MILANESE (FRANCE)
Guest Artist, North American Premier. The artist will be present to activate her work with a mediation team for the duration of the event. Three installations on the Place des Festivals represent the homes of three families or persons who have had to leave their dwelling. The artist uses their recollections as a launchpad for reproducing these places, a bit like floor plans (tape, painted concrete blocks, etc.). The ensemble will house the activation of the participative work Sous quel toi ? With Sous quel toi ? Joanne Milanese turns her attention to the way we perceive strangersduring a first encounter, and the manner we understand one another. Given that they are shaped by our reality (our culture, education, emotions, experiences, media messages) and in constant interaction with our environment, how much of our thoughts are objective and not subjective? Through a series of illustrated interviews involving the description of an intimate space associated with an immigrant person’s past, a space that person shall never see again, Milanese examines the mental constructs of two people engaged in dialogue. Through this exercise, she hopes to showcase a system of thought that goes beyond the memory of an image or fantasy. She uses illustration to take a formal approach to our interlocutor’s reality.
"MIGRATIONS"
WARTIN PANTOIS
A visual and audio installation created from testimonials gathered from 400 migrants camping in a park in Nantes, and from archive sources as well. Four of the five tents from the original installation were donated to those Nantes migrants. The fifth has been covered in gold leaf. The installation now takes the form of a single, isolated tent—a precarious but invaluable shelter for those who have no other roof to put over their head. Wartin Pantois creates works on a human scale that question social relations and our relationship with the world around us. His installations take the form of everyday objects and of characters to provide perspectives that foster thought and debate.

The artist will be present to activate his work with a mediation team for the duration of the event. A wonder of recycling and reuse, this sculpture/shelter/boat/no-fixed-address performance has no ending and constantly revolves during the event, symbolizing the displacement of homeless people and of humanity, the migration of ideas, the decline of prejudice, and the end of the economy and of life as we know it. Montreal-born Guy Boutin still lives and works here. He was initially drawn to comic books as an art form, but his career has since encompassed painting, graffiti, tag, poetry and literature.
"L'ÎLE DE LA RENCONTRE"

Bernard Vallée, from Montréal Exploration, will be on hand to enrich your knowledge and discuss the evolution of Montreal as a result of the migratory waves that have brought all of us here. A timeline to represent the various waves of refugee arrivals to Montreal. Throughout history, some have left their countries urgently and fearing for their lives, others to leave behind a life with no future in the hopes of improving their lot and that of their children. This frieze was created by ATSA, When Art Takes Action from the resources at its disposal. In that sense, it is somewhat a reflection of unequal access to the information, archives and media records of arrivals through history and up to the present.

Do our memories of a particular place disappear more rapidly once we leave it? Will they stay attached to that place, or will they remain with us regardless of where we go? In 2012, after leaving my childhood home, I wished to revisit all the memories it had provided me. I therefore created this large wooden structure, akin to the frame of a house being built, which I can bring with me everywhere I go. Over the years, my recollections have expanded to include other experiences of uprooting. In collaboration with dancers and musicians, I get inspired by memories people share with me and use that to create an original work on the spot. This project was developed in collaboration with the organization Exeko within the framework of their Métissages Urbains creative residencies. Le cube de Danser nos souvenirs will be set up permanently in the public space for Cuisine ta ville.
PERFORMANCES
Attend live or participative performances in dance, theatre, music, etc. offered by artists who are refugees or from immigrant roots, and perhaps even find yourself being part of the performance.

«Pareil pas pareil » is a piece inspired by testimonies from many newcomers in Quebec. We gathered testimonies during francization courses and from this, « Pareil pas pareil » is born. This piece presents six short plays addressing the phenomenon of cultural shock. Six important themes are exposed: moral difficulties, custom changes, legalization of cannabis, learning of the French language, and racism. This project reinforces the intercultural dialogue leading to the acknowledgement of the other and to better intercultural relationships.. « Pareil pas pareil » is a gathering of short plays showing that « Together, we are Québécois ».

Danser nos souvenirs is an interactive dance and musical performance for the whole family. First, members of the public are invited to share a childhood memory with the artists. In return, the dancers and musician offer up a brief improvised performance, inspired by the memory. The project affords older people an opportunity to recall their childhood, and younger people to share a highlight of their lives. Regardless of their particular past, each participant helps inspire a short work of art that is entirely dedicated to him or her. Chloé Bourdages-Roy will be accompanied by interpretative artists Myriam Foisy, Ariane Dubé-Lavigne and Jessica Gauthier, and by musician Tristan Henry.

Rencontre des musiques autochtone et arabe is a creative project inspired by Indigenous culture and Arabic music. A celebration of encounter, memory and transmission. Oktoécho masterfully blends the musical idioms of the Middle East, Indigenous cultures and the West, under the artistic guidance of composer Katia Makdissi-Warren. The ensemble creates original Quebecois works while exploring the esthetics of a universe in which the fusion of different traditions transcends borders.

Founded in Montréal, El Son Sono is an ensemble comprised of 7 multicultural musicians, appearing as a four-piece for Cuisine ta ville. Brother and sister Tito and Élodie, born of Peruvian and Quebecois parents, sing a blend of folk and urban music. Their father taught them about Peruvian culture and music. They enhanced their traditional stylings through the influences of their Montreal-based musicians, who work in varied genres. Offering everything from Peruvian waltzes to rumbas, by way of cumbia, festejo and salsa, all with a strong jazz flavour, El Son Sono is a journey through the rousing rhythms of Latin America!

Singer-songwriter Joyce N’sana is a rising star in reggae and Afrobluehop. She grew up with the Congolese wars as a backdrop. Hers is a clear, determined message of peace. Possessed of a big voice that belies her small frame, N’sana’s brand of reggae is rooted in gospel music and tinged with a blend of Afro, blues and hip hop. “She has a strong stage presence that leaves no one indifferent,” explains Camuz. She has been dubbed by some the female Tiken Jah Fakoly.

In the Yoruba language, ADJOKÊ means the one we must cherish. ADJOKÊ is the name she was given by a Griot, who came interrupting her first performance in Bénin, with a spectacular baptism ceremonial; her name given by her ancestors! Stella is a Montreal-based artist who bears her roots from her Polish-Quebecer mother, her Jamican father, whom she knew barely, and also from her Haitian father-in-law. Raised in a small village of Gaspésie, she is now an engaged woman, having worked for ten years as a social worker for young people and marginalized families in the greater Montreal. Stella Adjokê is more than a singer-songwriter or an actress, she is a healer; beacuse if her art exists, it is to better heal the soul of those who open their minds to her works.

Using symbolic language to develop relational art in an urban setting. The L’Espace imaginaire project consists of capturing, on video, urban tales of imaginary spaces in public spaces. The aim is to stimulate the imagination of citizens through an abstract play on images: the game 55 ICÔNES proposes storytelling exercises to participants from all cultural backgrounds. Video sequences thus gathered will be categorized according to the images selected by the storytellers, in order to promote a relational art that makes use of a universal symbolic language. The ultimate purpose of the project is to create a series of documentaries on the use of symbolic language to develop relational art in an urban setting.

"FRICTIONS"

Frictions is a participative performance that explores the experience of migration as a physical one powered by the force of friction. The experience consists of superposing the pages of two books of the same size (in this case, dictionaries and books in two different languages) on a table. After doing this for a number of pages, any attempt to separate the two books will fail. The friction between the pages creates a bond as potent as any created by glue. The more effort expended to create traction, the greater the normal force and the tighter the bond. This amusing performance/experience will require two persons from different linguistic groups sitting face to face at the same table. Each will read random excerpts from books assigned to them, page by page, as though they were carrying on an absurd conversation, all the while building a bridge of words and pages that, at the very end, will reveal itself to be inseparable. Amanda Ruiz-Méndez is a Montreal-based Mexican artist. She studied architecture at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and holds a Master’s in Fine Arts from Concordia University. Her work incorporates various modes of community, art teaching and artisanry into participative performances and activism. She views citizen mobilization as a creative process at its core.

Ève-Marie Langevin, alias The People's Knitter, is a multidisciplinary artist. She combines poetry, performance, knitting-conversation, danced movement, martial arts and gesture painting, slam, singing, direct communication with the audience. For Cuisine ta Ville, she will do two mini knittings with the audience, leading a conversation about the question of the migration experience. These knittings-graffitis will be the bearers of the vibrations, ideas and emotions shared during the conversations. They will be thereafter exposed in the public space. Since 2012, the People's Knitter conceives, fosters and presents the People's Knitting as a relational art of the conversation.
