Exile, loss, uprooting, and rebuilding are themes that have inspired numerous artists. Art helps many people to get through such difficult times. Here are some artistic works that broach the topic from a dreamlike perspective.

"Des masques pour contrer l’indifférence"

In partnership with Maisonnée, which has been welcoming immigrants and refugees for 35 years in Montreal, Pascale Bourguignon has offered artistic workshops to young refugees between the ages of 12 and 16. On this occasion, they made papier-mache masks which they then painted. Tamila Hachemi, a youth worker at La Maisonnée, and several volunteers also took part in these workshops. The purpose of these workshops was to provide youth with a platform for expression, a way to account for the overwhelming experience of uprooting and to allow them to express the conflicting feelings that go through them in this imposed ordeal. The masks are accompanied by texts written by the young people. They explain their approach and the meaning that these masks have for them. Pascale Bourguignon is a contemporary artist working on the links between individuals, the displacement of populations and the place we occupy in our environment.

Artist Camille Havas presents excerpts of a book written by her father, who left Hungary in 1956 for France following the Hungarian Revolution. Born in France, she too immigrated, to Canada. Ms. Havas uses images of trees and roots to illustrate her father’s words. An illustrator, dancer and circus performer, Camille Havas practices a multidisciplinary art, creating works based on a message, objects, projections and simple movements. Look for the third volume of her book during the Expozine event next November 24. The exhibition will come to life as a performance on Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m.

As part of a series titled “Une Recette, Une Ville, Une Histoire”, the Centre Culturel Libano-Canadien (CCLC) is pleased to present its exhibition Beyrouth, ville du Phénix. One recipe: “Brûle tes doigts”, which is the name given to a vegetarian recipe (“Horak Osbao” in Arabic). One city: Beyrouth, reborn in the 90s after a quarter-century of war. One story: discover it in the Tempo tent during Cuisine ta ville. The CCLC’s mission is to provide Quebecers and Canadians multicultural exchanges and experiences that foster human fulfillment and empowerment. This helps integrate communities into the broader Canadian society.

Photographer Michel Huneault documents the interception of asylum seekers crossing from the United States into Canada and their confused quest for a safe place to stay. In early 2017, the number of asylum seekers along Roxham Road spiked. This quiet path between the U.S. and Canada suddenly became the main point of entry for migrants entering Canada on foot. On the photos, the asylum seekers appear as anonymous silhouettes. The textures reference another series of photographs, taken during the 2015 migrant crisis in Europe. Accompanied every day from 5 to 10 p.m. by journalist and mediator Sophie Mangado.

We are bombarded by statistics on the status of migrants, systematically released by the media. This data is consistently used in an erroneous or incomplete manner to disinform or to stoke fear. Au centre des données is a series of posters presented as an investigation that deciphers the news in order to debunk the myths. Using graphic tools, it sets out certain figures in order to encourage debate and discussion. These numbers are presented simply to restore a human dimension to the barrage of information and to counteract the constant stereotypical, often degrading, representations of migrants, helping us understand that the world is not the victim of some barbaric invasion.

The intervention Le Temps d’une Soupe goes to school to get students talking about various social issues. The students chatted about how their differences and similarities are perceived and experienced at school, and will be throughout their lives. Discussions were held in groups and later in pairs, and followed by the taking of poetic portraits.

Our future is endangered by climate change, which accentuates the worst experiences of humanity (death, suffering, war, exile...). How does one approach this subject? My questioning, which involves environmental activism, expresses itself in action, in writing, but also in painting. Citizen, immigrant, mother, grandmother and painter, I present here some paintings from a series entitled The March of the Seasons. My work is inspired by nature as well as by other artistic fields (photography, literature, music, dance). The canvases, accompanied by a short explanatory text, invite us to reflect on appearances and the complexity of the stakes. The passage of the seasons, and the place of humans in their environment, punctuate the creation of these paintings. The whole project is not meant to be catastrophic, but rather a call for reflection, solidarity and action.

Exclusive premiere of the visual exhibition Racines croisées at Cuisine ta ville. A photographic exhibition, an audio podcast and a short-form video, Racines croisées is the fruit of an intergenerational encounter between a class of students and some seniors, two groups that likely would not have crossed paths otherwise. Each photograph is enhanced by a soundtrack. Visitors can enter the intimacy of the participants, who share their dreams, sorrows, daily lives, and more. Paul Tom and Mélissa Lefebvre also invite you to the screening of their film Baggages, on Thursday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. The screening will be followed by a discussion.

A blend of theatrical fiction and live testimonials, J'irai migrer chez vous offers the spectator a unique experience amidst migrants going through a forced displacement. A singular sensory laboratory in which artists from different backgrounds mingle with spectators to experience something at times both painful and enlightening. The spectator is invited to follow a chorus of migrants through a series of stand-alone scenes and is constantly required to interact with his/her environment, individually or as part of a group, to seize those objects that remain at his/her disposal, and to decide where his/her steps will lead. The Passeurs de Voix collective examines the big societal issues through the lens of theatre, with artists or witnesses whose voices are rarely, if ever, heard on Québec stages.

Veronica Mockler was a resident artist at Jeanne-Mance High School (CSDM) in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal borough for six weeks. During her time there, she worked with 16 teenagers who had recently arrived in Quebec. Together, they produced video performances on the daily interests and concerns of the students. Teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17 addressed their personal reality through performance, video, oral history and conceptual art frameworks. This work aims to make its audience aware of the actual thoughts and discourses of young people who have immigrated. In this reflective project, Veronica Mockler goes against documentary tendencies that gratuitously victimize and exploit the narratives of individuals who have undergone migration. Les Interprètes is about how these teens, and by extension others who have undergone migration, are not just the sum total of their difficult experiences. The work exemplifies the control these teens rightly have over their depiction.

Montrealer Martine Fidèle is an author and actor. Born in Haiti, and a former artistic resident at the Royal Saltworks at Arc-et-Senans near Besançon, she has authored three books, including Double Corps. In 2017, Martine also published Écorchées vivantes (Mémoire d'encrier), a collection of nine stories by young female Haitian writers with strong voices. Écorchées vivantes received the 2018 Prix Afrique Caraïbe Pacifique. Martine continues to write, works with children and youth, and hosts reading workshops, among other pursuits.

But islands are also metaphors, havens in which memory takes shelter from violence. Similarly, the spoken word finds sanctuary in poetry, which revives meaning and creates a language where relationships can thrive. Meanwhile, the sea plays the role of an imposter: it is the site of shipwreck, of the pervasive death that fills the streets and permeates the cities, infiltrating homes and subjugating their inhabitants.

“Frictions” is a participatory performance that addresses the experience of migration as a physic experiment using the force of friction. The experiment consist in overlapping the pages of two equally sized books (here, dictionaries in two different languages), placed on a table. After overlapping several pages, any attempt to separate the books by tugging and pulling on them will inevitably fail. The friction between pages creates a bond as strong as if they were glued together. The greater the pulling effort, the greater the resulting “normal force” and the tighter the bond. This playful performance/experiment will involve two people of different languages, facing each other across the same table. Each will read random fragments from their assigned books, page by overlapping page, as if holding an absurd conversation, all the while building a bridge of words and pages that will, in the end, reveal itself to be unbreakable. Amanda Ruiz-Méndez is a Mexican artist based in Montreal. Her work incorporates different modes of collective work, from art and craft teaching to participatory performances and activism. She considers social mobilization as a fundamentally creative process.

Renowned artist Madam Yan Lu has received numerous distinctions in China. The Beijing Opera is a very demanding art form, requiring 10 years of devoted study for as little as one minute onstage. Here, we present two well-known pieces representative of Beijing Opera. In addition, a mediator will provide commentary so that listeners can appreciate them in their fullness. A brief performance will be followed by a conference to explain the challenges faced by arts group Jingju Québec and how its members share their passion. Le Collectif Feuille déchirée is comprised of artists who first met during the Post-Marginal event promoted by Toronto’s Modern Times in partnership with Diversité Artistique Montréal (DAM). “Avant que la dernière feuille ne tombe” is the collective’s first work. It takes the form of letters addressed to our grandmothers. From this period—our childhood—when the impressions gathered by our senses were the focus of our attention, we have held on to certain souvenirs: crunchy, fragrant, delicious, unique and universal ones. We cook and partake of the dishes of our grandmothers from here and elsewhere. Another world, another time, today’s emotions, and memories of the past all shape this story. We open a door in order to question our grandmothers, and we invite you, at the end of the performance, to scribble down a note to them on a sheet of paper. We will then use these as inputs to draw a new world map, one based on our stories!

The work of Ondinnok, an arts company engaged in research and creation, is part of a broader movement for the cultural reconstruction and revival of the First Peoples of the Americas. Drawing on her personal history and her career as an artist, dancer and choreographer, Patricia Iraola explores migratory energy and the ancestral ties that bind Indigenous nations from North to South. Through body movement, languages and music, this workshop invites one and all to cast off the shackles of colonization and to honour the host society. The workshop is open to all, young and grown-up alike. Bring comfortable clothes and shoes, your baby-holders, even a yoga mat.

Trajectoires is a hybrid videographic installation inspired by documentary cinema. It follows the journey of seven residents of one of Canada’s most multiethnic neighbourhoods, Parc-Extension, which is changing at a fascinating pace. I interviewed them about their individual paths and what brought them to this neighbourhood, and their lives now. The work takes a critical look at the evolution of the neighbourhood and its gentrification. What impact will the construction of the Université de Montréal’s campus, 38 football fields in size, and the 10,000 people who will visit it each week have on this landlocked neighbourhood and its majority immigrant population?

Samy-Jade became interested in young newcomers when she started working as a specialized educator in a school in Chomedey, Laval. This interest turned into a veritable vocation during the massive arrival of Syrians in 2016. She gave herself a mandate: to bring meaningful experiences to them and listen to what these young people had to say about their life journey, and to capture everything in a documentary and web capsules to be made available on social media. At that moment, the Dans Leurs Yeux project was born. The project was highlighted as one of the innovative projects at the CSLAVAL Volunteer Gala in 2017. The director and some of the subjects in the documentary Dans Leurs Yeux participated in screenings at the “Forum Jeunesse: Ensemble nous sommes le monde” youth forum and at several schools, training centres, conferences and community events.

Their situation seems hopeless, stuck between the dictatorship of ISIS and their dream destination: Europe. What The Wind Took Away takes a deeply poetic approach to the very personal stories of these Yazidi women, and a lyrical journey through their everyday lives in the refugee camp.

A singular, strong, disciplined and energetic woman, this choreographer and dance teacher led her life as she saw fit, marking then the cultural history of her country Haiti. This movie offers an overview of her life through the visit of her house, a « Ginger bread house » where every corner is full of memories. This is the portrait of an endearing woman showing a face of Haiti that we know too little.

While life moves on normally in such a day, the signal of the first match seems to be disrupted by strange audio waves. The frustration in the air builds up giving way to a bigger live event.
