DADA is a lawyer by training, a part-time poet, an eco-poetic researcher, and an aspiring playwright. This year, she is also one of the artists in residence at La Serre - arts vivants.
Her creative process relies on hybrid and protean codes, blending theatre, performance art, and music.
Her work aims to develop a poetic and political language by collaging various materials (intimate, legal, sociological, literary, and documentary). She seeks to produce forms that do not shy away from the cruelty of the world but also do not reject gentleness and tranquility. Her current research explores the aestheticization of violence, regimes of appearance, and the commodification of identities.
DADA will be at La Montagnarde from October 16th to 26th and then from January 28th to February 7th to work on her project, "Anatomy of a Commercial Product."
"This play aims to question the conditions of success and legitimation of Black creativity within traditional institutional and creative circuits. It seeks to examine disguises, self-representations, clichés, and discourses that speak. Those who can never be artists in the purest sense. Those whose writing is inherently political. Those whose writing is 'always preceded.'"

Barbara Kaneratonni Diabo is Kanien'keha:ka (Mohawk), originally from Kahnawake. She now resides in Montreal where she serves as the artistic director and choreographer for A'nó:wara Dance Theatre.
Praised for her choreography and performances for over 25 years, she creates to illuminate Indigenous themes, stories, and perspectives. To achieve this, she blends pow-wow, Haudenosaunee, and contemporary dance styles to invoke an artistic fusion that resonates with diverse audiences. Diabo is dedicated to sharing her culture, performing across Canada and internationally.
In 2021, she was also honored with the Montreal Dance Prize in the INTERPRETER category. Barbara Kaneratonni Diabo collaborates with various organizations, including La Danse sur les routes du Québec and the Indigenous Performing Arts Alliance, where she contributes to educating communities, creating safe spaces, and supporting Indigenous artists worldwide.
Her Mohawk culture teaches her that dance is more than a spectacle. Diabo performs and creates for future generations, to honor her ancestors, to foster a sense of community, for those who cannot dance, to inspire, to communicate, to encourage cultural pride, and to uplift spirits.
Barbara will be at La Montagnarde from December 12th to 18th to work on her dance project "Our Medicines," which honors the medicines of the natural world.
"I wish to create a dance piece honoring the medicines of the natural world. Humans have always had illnesses, but there are different ones developing today due to our disconnection from nature. The piece would begin by exploring the effect of illness on our bodies but would slowly transition towards peace and harmony with medicinal plants. I would use both traditional and contemporary dance. I feel that this piece will be a true tribute, not just a 'performance.' Dance is powerful in my culture."

LAURA DOYLE PÉAN

Laura Doyle Péan (they/them) is a multidisciplinary artist, poet, and queer activist of Haitian-Quebecois origins who is interested in the role of art in social movements.
The 23-year-old author published their first book, "Cœur Yoyo," in 2020 and has been involved in numerous artistic productions with the feminist queer collective Les Allumeuses, as well as with Espace de la Diversité. Laura's work has been featured in multiple Quebec literary publications and has been showcased in artistic projects in Belgium, the United States, France, Mexico, Russia, and the United Kingdom.
You can find their most recent writings in the books "11 Brefs Essais Queer," "Pissed, Pestes, Puissantes," and "Black Joy Unbound."
Laura will be at La Montagnarde from February 19th to March 11th, working on their poetry collection "Toujours Nous Nous Retrouvons" (We Always Find Ourselves).
"This project addresses the issue of gender-based violence from an anti-prison feminist perspective. I explore the spectrum of gender-based violence, touching on various manifestations of it in domestic, political, cultural, and educational spheres, as well as in the workplace.
Rather than solely focusing on the manifestations and consequences of gender-based violence, I aim to honor the resilience of those who experience and combat such violence, as well as the healing and restorative strategies that can mitigate its impact and transform the conditions in which it occurs."

Come and visit the La Montagnarde artist residency, which has seen the birth and development of many artistic projects.
The artist-in-residence will present the writing process of their poetry collection toujours, nous nous retrouvons. As part of her residency, Barbara returns to Sainte-Marguerite, where she lived 20 years ago, for a meeting organized in collaboration with the la MRC des Pays d’en Haut and Maison des Arts Sainte-Marguerite.
The meeting will take the form of a discussion during which Barbara will present her new project, a contemporary Indigenous dance performance titled 'Our Medicines,' honoring the medicines of the natural world. She will also showcase some dance movements and share aspects of her Indigenous culture.
