Esther Trépanier, Francine Couture and Ève Lamoureux are three UQAM art history professors who share a passion for urban art and citizen activism. Their conference will focus on activist art within the city, from the turn of the 20th century to the present.

ATSA invites all Montrealers to be a part of the second edition of FIN NOVEMBRE, an event which follows in the tradition of the ÉTAT D'URGENCE gatherings that ran for 12 years.
PLACE ÉMILIE-GAMELIN CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY! And since this past May, ATSA has been poring through archival material in order to reveal the history and secrets of this public square. ATSA is organizing a memorable event that reaches down to the very DNA of this space that has witnessed its share of humanity, creativity and perennial social struggles. The event is driven by two passions that inform and permeate ATSA’s creative work: history and social issues!
As is its custom, ATSA provides a friendly space for everyone, driven by the desire to bring succor and tangible aid to the underprivileged while denouncing social exclusion. The event will give the homeless and other Montrealers the opportunity to get involved as on-site volunteers, thereby strengthening the ties that bind us all, in an incomparable atmosphere of mutual aid and social solidarity made possible by support from the artistic and business communities as well as the institutional sector and community-based organizations.

FIVE MONUMENTAL INSTALLATIONS AND SCREENING OF AUDIOVISUAL ARCHIVES, open to the public around the clock! These cover the legacy of Émilie Tavernier-Gamelin; the construction of Montreal’s metro network; the major social protest movements that shaped the square’s identity; and the work of Melvin Charney. They foster reflection on the Place’s evolution and its role in the city.

A special evening of SPEECHES in the PUBLIC SQUARE
25 outspoken celebrities and citizens will seek to inspire us with their vision of tomorrow’s Québec, the Québec most, if not all, of us would wish to see, reflected on a smaller scale by Place Émilie-Gamelin: a place that belongs to everyone, for everyone, oriented first and foremost toward the community, mindful of that sometimes too-fine line between what is public and what is private… An evening for putting into context the political awakening embodied by this spring’s student demonstrations, along with the hopes they raised; for consolidating the sense of solidarity felt during the struggle; and for valorizing the power of critical reflection.
