A touring exhibition designed and produced by ATSA

ATSA wishes to thank the Conseil des Arts de Montréal en tournée for producing and staging this exhibition in Montréal, as well as the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec for supporting the Quebec and Canada tour.  Thanks to the Canada Art Council for their support in the canadian tour.

After producing 11 editions of the État d’Urgence “manifestival”, which garnered the 2008 Citoyen de la Culture prize, ATSA created a multidisciplinary visual exhibition featuring works by over 20 artists—local, Canadian and foreign—who made original contributions to État d’Urgence during the event’s run between 1998 and 2010, covering video, photography, illustration, poster art, archival film, soundtracks and installations.

The public is invited to discover these colourful, ingenious, sensitive, playful and impactful artistic statements that all deal with the theme of homelessness and the encounter of that often-feared individual: the outsider. Welcome to the artistic universe of État d’Urgence, a voyage that leaves no-one indifferent, and that makes the case that art can be a means of survival.

Beauty is in the details: The 10 ans d’urgence exhibition will allow visitors to discover paintings on unconventional media by the artists of the St. James Drop-in Centre and Sylvain Bouthillette; the sonic work of Luc Raymond; the collaborative illustrations of the via collective; the photography of Bo Huang and Jean-François Lemire; the paintings of Marie-Claude Pratte , the territorial map of the artists of Cactus Montréal and P.L.A.I.S.I.I.R.S; the drawings of Louis Perron and Labohem; Patrick Bérubé’s china cabinet; Phil Allard’s housebike; the soundtrack and photos by Mohamed Lofti and Réal Capuano; a compilation of snapshots of squats by Mathieu Caron; snippets of the open-mic event recorded by Luc Deschesne; Hans Winkler’s survival handbook; banner illustrations/impressions by Donigan Cumming; photomontages by Leonel Luna; a poster by Dominique Blain; Winfred Baumann’s instant housing; Sérgio Cezar’s miniature cardboard architecture; Jenna Maclellan’s textile installation; Luc Sénécal’s impressionistic video; a photographic anthology by Martin Savoie featuring the works of Armand Vaillancourt, Karen Spencer, Héloïse Rémy, Sylvie Cotton, Mario Duchesneau and Kyohei Sakaguchi; two installations by ATSA; the award-winning É.U. posters designed by orangetango; and a collection of video capsules by Santiago Bertolino, Steve Patry, Henrique Vera Villanueva and Luc Sénécal to round out the retrospective of the magical, socially inclusive gatherings that were the État d’Urgence events.
